He is Risen! Alleluia!

Happy Easter and Happy Mother’s day to all our earthly Mothers.

As we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter, this Sunday May the 12th. ; I realized it has been awhile since I reached out to all of you wonderful mission partners. The month of April went by so fast for us. I am sure it was the same for each of you back in the States. We wanted to share with you what has taken place since our return from hosting the FMC welcoming retreat in Moyobamba; my family and I hit the ground running. I must say the retreat was a wonderful time set aside to get to know the new missionaries who were just sent to serve here in Peru. It was a blessing to see that we are not so alone in our mission here. New friendships are forming among all the new missionaries, and God has such a wonderful plan for them all.

Making disciples

Upon returning back, we have started back sacramental prep classes in all three pueblos, and youth group just started back last week. This year we have 20 youth that have made a commitment to gather each Thursday For fellowship and prayer.  The 20 youth will also help with the celebrations of the liturgy of the word each Sunday and accompany my children and I with home visits each week. In the states, working with the youth as a Youth Coordinator, 95% of the youth had already received the sacrament of Baptism, First Holy Communion and preparing or had already received the sacrament of Confirmation. Here it is very different. Out of the 20 youth that are participating in the group only one has received sacraments and the other 19 have yet to receive the sacrament of Baptism. Please keep them in your prayers that they may have a desire to enter into the church and to receive the amazing gifts the Father has to offer in the form of the Sacraments.

“ Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” -Matthew 28:19-20

When You walk into a room, everything changes

We Wait
The lyrics to one of my families favorite songs to sing, comes to mind as I share with you how our hearts are filled with a great JOY to tell you that later this month Father Francisco will install Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. When Jesus walks into our town, things are going to change. We are so excited to have been asked to journey with those whom we live among, and to witness the darkness turning into light. Since arriving last year it has been a true struggle for my family and I to live without the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Back in the states I would run and sit at His feet with every problem I had. Every evening my children and I would visit Jesus and we would have night prayer. His presence in the Eucharist is life changing, I can not imagine what amazing things lay instore for our little town. My Family and I have felt the poverty ourselves, and it truly is a poverty of its own not to be able to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and more so not to be able to run to him in the blessed sacrament each time ones heart desires.

With such joy also brings a bit of anxiety.  I beg you to pray for me. I am really nervous to be the one appointed by the Bishop and Father Francisco to care for Jesus. Having Jesus present in our chapel will add to are duties in the mission field, but in a very positive way. My families morning prayer at 6am will now be in the Chapel instead of our home. We will also have an open invitation for the pueblo to join us. Something that is unfathomable for me to comprehend is the fact that I have been asked to expel and lead adoration once a week. I keep asking Jesus “ don’t you think there is someone WAY MORE QUALIFIED THAN I”; Taking a look to my left and to my right as I make a full turn , I just hear Jesus saying “YOU ARE QUALIFIED, I HAVE HAND PICKED YOU.” I am confident that with each of you storming heaven, I will be given the courage, and graces needed to allow Christ to be the center of our little town here in the Jungles of Peru. I personally pray that the faithful of our pueblo will feel the presence of the Lord ; the same as one can feel during praise and worship or while resting in His arms during adoration. I can only pray that the same will take place when Jesus walks into his little dirt road pueblo of Shimbillo.

"Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory." -Psalm 24:9 – 10

Palm Sunday

Gabriel And Father during Palm Sunday Mass
Holy week was such a blessed week. Starting with a wonderful Mass in Pucacaca where the single girls team lives. We were able to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass.  Gabriel is such an awesome Altar server. I remember he always watched his sister in the States and wanted to Altar serve with her, but was always told he was to young. He has never had an official training, he has just had an immense desire and paid close attention during Mass and had a little training by his sister on how to serve at the Altar. This kid has jumped in with both feet upon arriving last year; even though he had yet received his First Communion he was Altar serving; very different from the norm of the United States. Gabriel has since served each week and sometimes two or three masses a week and has served for three different Bishops here in Peru. (and all in a different language.)   On palm Sunday he was in charge of leading the crowd of people behind  Father Francisco as he rode a donkey to the church.

The Hidden Power of Holy Water – Easter Sunday

Super blessed to have witnessed the tender love of Christ. Father Francisco celebrated Easter Mass in our little Pueblo. But even better than that (how can it get even better you ask) 5 children became new members of the Catholic Church receiving the sacrament of Baptism.
The picture is a bit poor on quality , but it is still worthily of sharing with you. Magaly's children Brandon, Cesar, Hilberto and baby Lely became members of the church Easter Sunday.   Receiving the Sacrament of Baptism. The family now attends our Pueblos celebrations every Sunday.

My heart is so full to have witnessed this amazing love that he continues to pour out over us!

4 of the children who received the sacrament of Baptism was Magaly's children. Yes that's right!  From fighting the attacks of the devil in their home with Holy Water to witnessing their baptism with the same life giving, powerful Holy Water, made my heart burst with an amazing JOY!

"The Lord hears the cry of the poor"-Psalms 34

Prayers for Healing- Believing in Miracles

In missions we are never promised that we will see the fruits of our labor. At times the Devil whispers that we should be helping more people;
that our work is not fruitful.

BUT we must Ignore His lies! If this beloved child of God was the reason he sent us to serve in Peru than we have been obedient to His Will!
Julianna is such joyful nurse.

We feel so honored that God called us to serve this beautiful lady and her family. Although the road has been very rocky and muddy to say the least we have been blessed to journey with her.

God loved her soooo much to send my family to love her, and two groups of Doctors one from St Benedictine College and the other from Córdoba Spain to Diagnose her. Last year at this time I was in tears because I had no idea how to help her. All I could do was pray. God heard each one of our prayers

Magaly receiving her Meds.
It seems that she has parasites that have gone to her brain and they are causing the neurological disorder. PRAISE GOD ! We have been given 3 different medicines to treat her with, for the next month and a half. All free of charge. We visit Magaly two times a day to give her medicine. We can already see a change in her speech and in her walk. We ask you to please keep Magaly in your prayers and my family as we continue this journey with her.

Pray we may become more like Christ to love the poor as he did.

PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR. Christ, who became poor, and was always close to the poor and the outcast!

LORD GOD MAKE US POOR AND AN OUTCAST, SO WE CAN SERVE YOUR PEOPLE IN A TRUE AND HONEST WAY! AMEN

Revealing His Identity

Picture taken in the states last christmas.
Super Missionary Boy has done it again. Although he has now revealed who he is by not wearing a mask he has made another video. With a reflection of the stations of the cross done in Shadows. During Lent four teens from our pueblo practiced an amazing number of hours to help present the stations to three different Pueblos. We were even invited to perform for over 100 teenagers in the bigger town of Picota all whom were attending a retreat. The group performed the stations two different times ,back to back, while in Picota. Please remember we are working with what we have. We invite you to take a look at the behind the scenes. The front and the behind the scenes footage was captured during  different performances, so there will be a slight difference in timing.  I would have to say it’s amazing what the end product looks like for the audience. The props were made by Julianna out of old clothes cardboard and tape. We could not have done any of this without the help of Daniel Mancilla who created the sound track and each prayer and reflection for the stations. How amazing it was, that he was willing and able to send it from the states to us here in Peru.  He played such a role in helping the poor know of Gods radical love for them. Thank you Daniel. Working with the teens and my children during the past lent was a fruitful experience because Super missionary Boy was not the only one revealing their identity during this project,  Jesus revealed himself in many different ways to us all and to those who watched the presentation of the shadows.  I have attached Gabriel’s - AKA Super Missionary Boy’s video for you to watch.

 COMFORT OVERFLOWS

Mr. Gilbert went home to the Lord on Easter Sunday. We will miss him dearly. We cannot express how grateful we have been to journey with this man that was so full of Joy. When we visited him each week it felt like we were spending time with Jesus. Our mission each week was to simply set with him, to read the bible with him and to pray. It seemed each time we visited him he gave us so much more. He not only was patient enough to correct my errors as I read in Spanish to him but He filled our hearts with such love and to see his smile and how he trusted in the Lord was irreplaceable.
Mr. Gilbert
Mr. Gilbert lived in a small one room shack with walls, made out of bamboo with his wife, with no running water or electricity. He lived with such hardships that we take for granted while living in the states and  now has become the norm and a daily struggle for us here in our small town we serve. I find my self complaining about an entire week without electricity and no running water. Which is something that is becoming even more common here in our town we live in. Yet Mr. Gilbert lived with this his entire life. His nature was not to complain. His nature was to give glory to God and to praise His Holy Name.  Each visit with him I never heard him complain once. He loved God, his wife and his family. Each time my children and I walked away we would walk the 20 minutes back home talking about how we admired him and how we should be more like Gilbert and not complain about our hardship. Instead to embrace them. During his funeral I reflected on how I could live more like Gilbert, More like Christ. He will be missed by my family and I terribly. But are hearts are filled with such peace to have known him and to have been present in his last years of his life. Grateful that we said yes to missions and grateful we did not miss this wonderful divine encounter with the Lord through Mr. Gilbert.

Mr. Gilbert always sought Christ during his life and during his last years of suffering with a tumor in his abdomen. But within all his struggles and troubles he lived with,  the comfort of Christ ; that comfort was overflowing from this poor frail little old man abundantly.

May you rest in peace Mr. Gilbert!

“Who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.”-2nd Corinthians 1:4-5

We love each of you immensely and pray you can feel the presence of the Lord among you each and every day!

I beg you to please pray for us and for the us to be faithful to God’s mission.

Laying hands on a Van

Laying hands on a Van

My family were able to enjoy the FMC community retreat in Moyobamba Peru in the heart of the Prelatura that we serve in. It was a chance to get to know the new missionaries who just arrived in the country, a time for rest, and a beautiful chance to attend daily mass at the cathedral, and we even had time for some FUN!

The last day of the retreat we as a community were ready to ventured off to a swimming hole about 45 mins north of Moyobamba.  Since most of us missionaries do not own a vehicle, the single girls team and my family needed to find our way to the swimming hole.
We decided to take a taxi. Once we arrived at the taxi terminal we were able to fit the single girls team and my family all in to one van, which was a relief because traveling to an unknown place in a foreign country isn’t always the same as in America . We were quickly on our way for a day of fun. I somehow ended up sitting in the front with the driver with Julianna and Gabriel in the back with the girls team.  Our driver was a young gentleman named Nelson in his mid to late 20’s, wearing shades and dress in a nicely pressed taxi uniform. Windows down and his radio playing a mix of Peruvian and American music from the 80’s.  He was curious to know what country we were from and how long we would be visiting Peru, I explained we were all from the United States and that we were Catholic missionaries and that we live about 3 hours south of Moyobamba serving in small pueblos not to far from one another . About that time one of my single missionary sisters asked me in English if we would like to pray the rosary. So all 7 of us began to pray the rosary; It took a minute for Nelson to realize that we were praying because we were praying in English. I felt a bit upset at my self that I did not explain to him before hand that we were going to pray the rosary and  a bit shy to ask him to turn down his music. (Even though one of the songs that came on during the rosary was BELIEVER from imagine Dragon.)  However the Lord used my shyness and the awkwardness to begin a beautiful conversation with Nelson after we were finished praying.  Once we made the sign of the cross Nelson immediately asked if we had been praying I said “yes we were praying the rosary, asking for Mother Mary to intercede for us and for others”.  It was a perfect chance for me to ask Nelson if he was Catholic. He replied that he has not been to church in a very long time. That he is not Catholic nor any other religion.  The rest of the ride consisted of us talking about the United States and different Languages, and his desire to learn English.  Soon we arrived at the swimming area, I noticed that there were no taxi’s waiting to return with swimmers, so I asked Nelson how we would be able to get back to Moyobamba from here. (After all it wasn’t in my plans that day to be stranded in the middle of NO WHERE.) He was nice enough to give us his cell number and he told us to call him an hour before we were ready to leave and he would pick us back up. What a relief that was!

We had a wonderful time at the swimming area and enjoyed wonderful community time with all the FMC missionaries. We were ready to head back around 2pm, so decided we should call for Nelson to come and pick us up.

After about an hour wait, just as he had promised, We could hear Nelson coming down the road to pick us up. The music setting the tempo for Gabriel and the single team to practice on their dance moves before Nelson came to a complete stop. The young man was so professional and wanting to offer his best. He jumps out of the van and opens the doors and we all piled in, this time one of the single girls jumped up front. We were all loaded, doors closed and ready to go. After adjusting the volume of the radio our driver Nelson started to turn the van around in the middle of the road and once he put it in gear the van would not move. We were cross ways in the middle of the rode. Nelson tried many times to get the transmission to go into gear. The mood in the van got a bit quite, those whom were not paying attention , now were attentive to the fact the van was not moving and that we were stuck in the middle of the road. Nelson again adjusted the volume of the radio but this time he turned it down right before jumping out of the van and crawling up underneath the van. All at the same time he had pulled is phone out of his pocket to make a call. At that time I mentioned  to everyone we should say a prayer for the van. As we were sitting in the van we all placed both of our hands on the van. Gabriel grabbed the window, I placed both my hands on the roof and between all 7 missionaries in the van we had it pretty well covered. While we began to pray and we begged Christ to  send down his angels to help. We asked that any evil spirits be gone from the van and that we, with Christ help make it back to Moyobamba. You could still hear Nelson trying to make a call from under the van at the same time we were praying. Nelson finally came around to the drivers side; and the person on the other end finally answered. Nelson was explaining that the van would not go in gear, he  sounded a bit nervous, and embarrassed, explaining that the van was full of passengers. Nelson showed is concern about how we were going to make it back. Meanwhile with the looks he gave us when he returned to see us with our hands strategically placed on his van, I am more than positive that this young man, at this time was thinking we were all a bit strange; he just could not say anything to us because he was still on the phone. And on his behalf when he returned   from underneath the van, he came back to the drivers side to see seven missionaries laying their hands on the roof of his van, on the seats, on the windows, and you can bet that our feet were doing some pretty silent work of their own, all as we prayed for Gods help. By the end of Nelsons conversation with the gentleman on the phone he sat down in the drivers seat;  we at this point were praying the Our Father, and about to wrapped up our prayer for help when he tried to put the van in gear again.

It was a prayer answered, the van went into gear! You could hear Nelson, tell the man on the other end “NEVER MIND”, the van went into gear were on our way.  Nelson hung up the phone and told us the van must have been possessed with brujas (witches). Sitting from the back I replied to his comment, no worries we just prayed for your van, and we will make it back to Moyobamba. We did in fact make the 45 minute trip back to Moyobamba . We pulled to the back of the taxi terminal,  and we were just feet away from entering into the terminal when the van would not make it any further. Praise God for answered prayers.

Since my time here in Peru, as a foreign missionary,  I have learned that there are so many ways that we can evangelize those God has sent us to,  and sometimes he just wants us to have faith in Him, and lay hands on a van. I cannot help but pray that next time Nelson’s van is not working that instead of making a phone call, he would remember the small miracle that God preformed, and that he would choose to just lay his hand on his van and call on Christ for His help !

Hello from Peru

Wow, we have been so super blessed this last past month and 1/2. We arrived back to our mission post here in Shimbillo Peru on the 2nd of February.

We hoped for a slow return into our ministries upon our arrival here in the Jungle. It’s funny that one of my fears before missions was if I was going to be bored. After all, a single mother with 4 children and two jobs what the heck was I going to do in the middle of the jungle. But much the same as last year Jesus again proved me wrong. Since our return we have been going nonstop which is great.

The home He prepared for us
We have moved to a different home, a home that is half the size of our home last year and a lot cooler than the previous one as well. We our blessed by the amazing breeze that comes in . Also we do not look so American in this home. Our last year’s home looked like a castle and very much not the same as those whom we serve. It made people feel a bit uncomfortable to come in. We are so grateful to have found this little tin roof home.

Another reason we wanted to change homes was because we were praying for more water. God affirmed me many times that in this house we would have water and He was right. Although not in the traditional way of turning on a faucet but by collecting rain water in buckets, and from our friends showering us with the lovely gift of water.  We have not gone without water since our return and have had enough water to take a bucket bath each day. Very different from last year.

A Family Retreat

My children and I were able to take a four day retreat offered by a wonderful Priest and Religious Sisters in the Northern part of Peru were we were greeted as a guest and provided housing and meals while we were there. It was a wonderful time for my children and I to call upon our Lord and ask him what His will is for us this year. How He would like us to serve Him and the poor whom we live among.  Please keep Julianna, Gabriel and myself in your prayers as we discern the next step that Jesus is calling us to. We are discerning if God might be calling us to serve in a different location than  our current mission post.  It is amazing how we feel Christ’s presence while in the mission field. You can feel him breathe and hear his voice so remarkably close. Its indescribable. We hear him speaking and we have entered into prayer asking Him to make His will know to us in a very clear way. So I beg of you all to keep praying for us to be able to have the courage for the next step as Foreign Missionaries.

A new chapel on top on the mountain we visited while on our retreat

Father Robert introducing us in the small humble chapel. They use school desk instead of pews.
Love one another
We were blessed on Saint Valentine’s day to go on 11 Home visits to those here in our home pueblo bringing each family a box full of food with Father Francisco. And we rounded the day off by traveling an hour away with Father Francisco to join him in celebrating mass in a small pueblo. What a wonderful way to celebrate Saint Valentines Day. Sharing our love with those in need and meeting Christ among the faces of the poor. Truly the best Valentines ever.

Maria and her family were one of 11 to receive a gift box

In His name we can cure the sick
We were happy to be able to host the very first Medical Mission here for our three pueblos we serve. The Doctors and student doctors and nurses from St Benedict college provided free consultations, medicine and personal hygiene products while we offered prayer and translation between doctors and residents. It was a blessed day for over 200 persons.

New Missionaries
In the remote area of the Jungles there is such a need of missionaries. It’s crazy to think about what a role we play here. We have only 2 priest and they serve over 175 pueblos. I know that in my home community in Wise County Texas we had 2 priest and they only serve 3 parishes and that was hard. But here without missionaries it’s impossible for the priest to get to every pueblo once a year much less each week. Although we cannot celebrate mass we can do so much more to help the Kingdom of God.  We can visit the sick, bury the dead, visit the incarcerated, celebrate the liturgy of the word, lead and teach catechism classes and prepare people to receive sacraments. By our baptism we are called to do such work and as foreign missionaries this is what we do on a daily bases. It is such a tremendous amount of work that at times seems like there is no end in sight.  We are so blessed that God answered our prayers by sending us 2 new families and 4 new singles to serve among us here in the jungle. Even though they live over an hour away  and our paths barely cross if ever. It’s great to know they will help with the work load of spreading the gospel message among the poor.

Praise God for new missionaries

Maybe we could get just a few more mattress on top.
Getting the new mission families homes ready before they arrived took a team effort!

Adventures of Super Missionary Boy
You may have seen the new YOUTUBE channel Super missionary boy, Gabriel has desired to share our families mission with others via YouTube. He is only 9 but has such a big heart for those we live among. Please keep him in your prayers that he will continue to have the desire to let others learn of the great need here among the poor through his videos. You can watch his latest by clicking the link below.

Home Visit Group
Please pray for our new home visit group. We have formed a new group this year which began on the 1st week of Lent, in one of our pueblos called Nuevo Codo and each Thursday at 3pm ( Devine Mercy hour) we gather to visit those who can not make it to church or those whom have fallen away. It’s a ministry my children and I have been doing but this year we have invited the pueblo to join us. I ask that you pray for the group that will have the strength and the courage to bring Jesus to the less fortunate. It’s hard at times among the faithful here for them to go out and sprinkle a bit of that seed that they have cultivated in their own hearts.  One of our goals is to make disciples among our pueblos but it’s difficult at times for them - the poorest of the poor- to remember that they are blessed in many ways and that they should share that with the poorer whom are less fortunate than they are. It’s much easier for a person rich with material things and money to share a bit of it with the less fortunate . But as the widow who gave her last two coins which together did not add up to much gave way more than the rich who only gave out of there surplus. As we read in Mark 12: 42-43 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.  Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. " Please pray that they will see their worth and what gifts each one in the group has to offer to those they are called to serve.

Home Visits In Nuevo Codo

Our home visit with Gilberto who has a tumor and is 78 years old.

Beggars For Christ - Uniforms for Lent
As a missionary its very humbling to have to beg. To be honest we beg for our food, transportation, for our clothes and for prayers on a constant bases. Becoming full time missionaries meant we became full time beggars for the poor. Such a very different world than I grew up in. I remember that 3 or 4 years ago in the beginning of my discernment process I had asked a missionary whom I honored. “How can I ever have funds to help the poor. How do you do it.” I told him how I felt called to serve but I did not have the “guts” to beg for funds to help the poor. I was determined to fund my mission myself.  But that missionary said some very harsh words to me. If I was truly called to be a foreign missionary he would give me the courage to beg.  He bluntly told me that “until I had the “guts” to humbly ask for help to serve the poor,  I would not be a foreign missionary” But I just could not get over myself enough to become a beggar for the poor. It wasn’t in my nature to ever ask for help much less for money.  But when your heart aches and you lay awake praying for the courage to help those in need He is faithful and He gives you the courage it takes to be humble enough to kneel among family and friends and complete strangers in His name.  He doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called. As we read in the book of Exodus.

After finishing our first year in missions last year it makes even more sense the TRUTH my missionary friend spoke to me so many years ago. Living as a full time missionary in a foreign country it’s impossible for us to do the work of the Lord as we do, on our own, for many different reasons. All though my family  has Religious visa’s and permission to live in Peru we do not have permission to work in the country, second we are FULL TIME missionaries which means we are serving every day, and for my family its very common to serve 6 to 7 days a week for 6 to 8 hours a day. It’s not something we do just in our spare time.

With that said It has be such a blessing to be His humble servant and to be able to connect the poor whom we live among with those whom are able to help financially. When we are beggars we are beggars for Christ and the voice for the less fortunate.

This year we felt confident that we could beg for help for school uniforms, shoes, school supplies and back backs for 10 children. It was hard to settle on a number because there are so many people here who need help. But we prayed about it and felt called to help 10 children who we have journeyed with since our arrival her last year. We launch the campaign UNIFORMS FOR LENT and praise God for his faithfulness to his people. We were able to raise the funds for not just 10 but for 13 uniforms. Thank you for all of you who made the sacrifice.  It’s comforting to know that God affirms us and our mission with his goodness and faithfulness in providing for his people here in Peru. To see so many fruits here in the mission field is the most greatest gift of all.

Thank you for your prayers and financial support.
Without you there would be no mission.
Without you we could not serve the poorest of the poor.

I pray that God will answer the prayers that lay within your hearts and that your hearts may be transformed in a radical way during this Lenten season.

With much LOVE!
