"God is all love. This gentle Savior pleads with us from the Host: “Love Me as I have loved you; abide in My love! I came to cast the fire of love on the earth, and My most ardent desire is that it should set your hearts on fire.”

We welcome this new season!

    Last Saturday was a very Holy and Blessed Day. It was the day that Santa Maria Magdalena’s home was officially opened and the day of the blessing of the Chapel and the 1^st mass to ever be celebrated here. There has been a great physical change here of course with the completion of the home, gardens, chapels, drive, and rock wall.  But there has also been a spiritual change that can be noticed by just walking through the gardens, having prayer time in the chapel, and just by being here.  

     Saturday on the feast day of Maria Magdalena the Bishop installed the Eucharist in the chapel which is a gift like no other. With that said it is as if the Lord and all the saints are walking about the property. The sounds of his creation have come alive more than ever, the birds sing louder, the river keeps a constant tempo throughout the land, and the flowers and other plants are thriving as never before.

    Father Robert had the day videoed, so I hope to share the day with you soon. The bishop's homily was incredible and such an encouragement, honor, and testimony, to Family Missions Company, to each one of you, and the Yes that so many of us have said to the Lord in order for this home, this chapel, and His mission to come alive here.

     Through my prayer time, Jesus has encouraged me to plan our 1^st women's healing retreat here. Gabriel and I are wrapping up our other ministries which we still have down the mountain so we can focus on serving those Jesus brings to the home. We had our 1^st adoration night last night. And will soon have a weekly worship night and potluck dinner.

     Our 1^st mission is to serve and walk alongside the mothers and children that he sends here but the second is to also disciple them and show them a healthy and holy community and allow them opportunities to serve the Lord within the surrounding community.

    This new season has my heart full and overflowing! It was the gift of Fortitude that served and allowed us to complete the 1^st initial phases of this mission here. Because with this virtue came opportunities to exercise courage, perseverance, patience, and meekness. I cannot wait to see what the Lord unfolds next. I am sure he intends to grow us and stretch us in all the things we struggle with. It is all but certain that he desires to give us opportunities to grow in our ability to love like him.  He has not revealed all of his plans to us, but we know whatever he has planned is going to be even more amazing than the past year.

The Lord's many miracles 

    The Lord has indeed performed many miracles here and he has multiplied everything from rocks, grass, and funds in order to complete the 1^st phases.

    But we still need monthly donations to operate each month and funds to build the long-term homes at the back of the property. As the community house will function for short-term mothers and healing retreats. We have redesigned and replanned the one-room homes in order to optimize funds.  With that said the material cost is estimated at $5,000.00 for each home and roughly $5,000.00 in labor, so a total of 10,000.00 for each home. We desire to build at least 3 to 4 homes.

I must confess to you that it is humbling to know that Gabriel and I are just merely conduits connecting Jesus’s resources with those who need them the most, His beloved poor.

It is not easy to ask for support/ funds because it is not my strong suit, I was raised to be self-efficient and not to ask for help; it was a disgrace to do so. But Praise God that the courage comes from him and that Jesus has whispered countless of times telling me “You are asking for me”! You are asking for my beloved poor” You are inviting others into the mission and giving them the same opportunities, I am giving you to serve, so be bold and trust in me.”

 

Maybe I have shared this with you already, but I was reminded of it just a few weeks ago and well Mother Teresa is my hero and a saint that I look up to and pray to often. I ask her to intercede for me often in the fundraising department. This article shows how bold she was for the poor and I desire to do the same!

Another inspirational act was the following story of her boldness, mercy and love for the poor

“One day, Mother Teresa was asking a baker for some bread to feed the hungry children in her orphanage. The baker was furious with her request, not only did he turn her down, he spat at her. In response to his outrageous actions, Mother Teresa calmly reached deep into her pocket, took out her handkerchief, wiped the spat off, and said "That was for me, now what about some bread for my poor children." The baker was touched by Mother Teresa's love and greatness, complied and thereafter provided bread for the children in the orphanage.

I know asking may offend some, but I can only pray that the cries of the poor can be heard louder than the groans and pains it may cause when I ask. I ask nothing for myself or for Gabriel and only ask for the poor whom Jesus desires us to serve. So I pray you will have Christ-like mercy on us and those we serve and invite you to become partners with us!

A place where heaven and earth collide

It is almost time to celebrate!

We are 21 DAYS away from the dedication mass of the chapel, and the blessing and opening of Casa de Santa Maria Magdalena, BUT WHO'S COUNTING! 

On July 22^nd at 11 pm we will host the Bishop and the priests of the Dioceses of Chachapoyas and together we will celebrate Mass and what the Lord has done here. The priests, I have heard through the grapevine, are very excited about the mission of the home and all that Jesus desires of this place of refuge.

We are finishing the many small details of the main house, chapel, its gardens, and the property’s fence that will provide safety for these mothers and their children. It has really been an honor watching the Lord design this home and the chapel.

A Place where heaven and earth collide

The pictures of the home and chapel and its gardens do not come close to doing them justice. The chapel was designed with no walls in order to allow the presence of Jesus to be found through the gardens, the songs of the birds, the view of the mountains, and the sounds of the river in the distance. Having no walls also symbolizes Jesus’s desire to restore and make disciples of the women and children who will encounter him there.    In real life, Santa Maria Magdalena’s home is stunning, majestic, and divinely designed to move one’s soul towards our Lord and I am so grateful for each of you who have made so many sacrifices to make this become a place where heaven and earth collide.

Other Ministry News

Though the construction of home and chapel has been the main mission that I have been writing about, I would also like to share with you the other details of what’s been happening lately at our mission post.

We have been asked to host once again the annual retreat for the Priest of Chachapoyas this August. We are short roughly $1500.00 Dollars to make this happen. If we can pull together the funds, we will be able to, rent a local hotel in its entirety. (Priests will lodge, dine, attend talks, and experience fun activities all at the hotel), provide 3 meals and snacks for all Priests and provide a guest Priest to help lead the retreat. So please keep us in your prayers as we continue to fundraise for this incredible opportunity to serve our Priest here.

Gabriel and I still celebrate the Liturgy of the word in Paraiso each Sunday, and it has been an honor to bring the Eucharist to them each week. The little remote town is about an hour away from us. And we are preparing two young ladies to receive the sacraments this year Diana who is 15 and wants to receive her Baptism, 1^st confession,1^st communion and confirmation and Antonella who is 14 and who desires to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the 1st time.

And we are celebrating these three young ladies who have been helping Gabriel altar serve for the last 3 years!  Please pray for Alejandra, Kendra, and Angie that they may continue to find true happiness in their ministry.

 

Maritza is going to officially move here to the home at the end of the school year and before than in August while the children are on break, they will be staying with us temporarily. Please pray for her and the children as they begin preparing for their move. Also pray for Maritza’s sweet daughter Alondra, she just had a growth removed from her chest and the tissue was sent off to test to see if is cancerous or benign. Please pray that Jesus may continue to Support and bless this family with the funds they need to not only survive everyday life but also now for Alondra’s medical care.

Current needs of the home and other minsitries 

It is not easy being in the trenches, as you can imagine. The poverty and struggles that we experience every day in the mission field have become ingrained in our hearts and minds as long as we have been here, sometimes its all we can see all that we know. I am so thankful for our mission partners who join us by supporting everything that happens here, without you there would be NO MISSION. 

"As I am just the mediator seeking to connect His people and His resources with His plan." With that said it is only right and just to share with you the needs here in the mission field because I truly believe that Jesus desires to furnish all the needs for the poor here. So once again I am asking on the behalf of our Lord and the poor here, please pray and consider making a vertical gift by moving some of your earthly gifts to your heavenly bank account.

Here is what our current fundraising needs are. 

With all the initial phases completed with the home and chapel, we are now actively fundraising for the last phases of the construction of Santa Maria Magdalena’s home, which is building three small one-room homes, 2 for long-term mothers and the other for the visiting priest who will be supporting the ministry of the home. (Roughly $20,00.00 USD) We are also trying to raise the funds for 20 bunk beds for the dorms ($5000.00 USD) or at least funds to purchase 40 mattresses which we could just place on the floor ($2200.00).

Lastly, we are trying to raise monthly support for the operating cost of the home. Our goal is set at $2000.00 to $2500.00 per month. This will cover everything the women and their children will need while staying with us (medical expenses, food, school uniforms, clothing etc.) Of course, this is our initial goal, and we may need to be adjusted as the Lord reveals more to us.

We also feel called to help supply the roofing material for the Chapel in a nearby town but of course we need your help in doing so. The community had to tear down their chapel because of the state it was in.  The adobe walls were crumbling and making it terribly unsafe. Along with the Catholic Community of this town we have been pitching in with the labor as well as holding raffles to raise money. The brick walls are almost complete, and they are planning on using the old pews and altar (which are in good shape),  but they are still short funds for the metal roof.  The cost to purchase the metal roof is $3000.00.

Motherhood and Piglets !

 

Happy Mother's Day 

I often wonder if I have lived in Peru a bit too long because some of the rarest, most simplest things fill my heart and make Christ’s presence known in such a real way to me. Perhaps it is not a bad thing, but I ask this question after spending the day yesterday with my dear friend Maritza. It was a wonderful day and it even got better right before we were about to leave. See one of the pigs properly named Negra that we bought Maritza a few years back was about to give birth to her 4^th set of baby piglets. We had been keeping an eye on her off and on during our visit and decided to check on her once again before heading out. When we arrived at her corral, we saw that Negra had already given birth to one baby, but it had not survived. Maritza tried to save it and she was in tears that the baby piglet was dead. But her tears turned to joy a few minutes after because here came the rest of the piglets. One, two, three, I was amazed at how quickly they were coming, and Maritza so lovingly took each one, removed the protective sack that they came out in, cleaned them, and returned them to their mother so they could eat. Negra gave birth to a total of 12 baby piglets. Her body, so perfectly designed and equipped for the job of motherhood. Maybe it is weird to say but watching Negra give birth and Maritza take such good care of her and her piglets made my heart full.

We all know that pigs have a bad reputation and oftentimes are not the most desirable animal and just the same I find that unwed mothers are thought of in the same manner.  Throughout the Bible, we are given many symbols of a pig. The Symbol of Uncleanliness, Leviticus 11:7. “And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. As Symbols of destruction and punishment, we can find in Psalm 80: 13, “Boars from the forest ravage it and insects from the fields feed on it.” They are even used as a symbol of rejected worship and sacrifice as we find in Isaiah 66:3 “whoever makes a grain offering is like one who presents pig’s blood, and whoever burns memorial incense is like one who worships an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and they delight in their abominations.” Pigs are even a symbol of foolishness in Proverbs 11:22 “A beautiful woman who rejects good sense is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.” Luke even writes of the prodigal son wherein he writes “So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.” Luke 15:15 And who can forget the story of Jesus casting the demons out of the two men and into the herd of pigs found in Matthew 8:28-34 “ He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.”

As you can see, we can find many associations in the bible where pigs are not mentioned in a positive light. A quick search on the internet about pigs and motherhood will give you the sight of a grim world we live in that believes that cruelty to pigs is allowed and gives us a snapshot of how pigs are beneath man.

With that said, I find here in Peru and in my personal experience in the USA as a single mother that often than not unwed mothers are treated just as harshly. Outcasted, kept at a distance, undeserving, not equal to, shunned from church communities because their marriage failed, left to take all the blame, abandoned, and stripped of all dignity, and the list goes on.

However, on this day I could not help but notice my dear friend Maritza taking such gentle care of her pig Negra and her piglets. Maritza made sure her children were by her side, and she carefully explained and taught them how to care for each piglet upon their arrival into this world.

I also took in the fact that this unwed mother finds self-worth and dignity in caring for all of her pigs and piglets. This so-called filthy, unclean animal allows her to provide for her family.

Maritza, an outcast many would say, treats this unclean pig with the utmost respect and love.

What I feel many people forget about Pigs and Unwed Mothers is the fact that both are creations made by God.  Despite the chocolates and the flowers, we brought Maritza for Mother’s Day, Jesus gave Maritza possibly the best Mother’s Day gift ever, 11 piglets, a gift that would allow her to carry her cross of being a single mother just a little easier.

Yesterday I was delighted at what the Lord had to show me in Maritza and Negra, two loving Mothers, both deserving of respect, love, and compassion. Both ready and willing to serve Jesus in the way only they can fulfill here on earth.

May our hearts be moved to compassion and love for all the unwed single mothers who are hidden in the shadows of the outcasted, abandoned, and forgotten, who so bravely carry their crosses daily in hopes to one day hear, “well done good and faithful servant”.

What is Love?

 

Just a small reflection on today’s Gospel that I wanted to share.  

The verses that have penetrated my heart during prayer today are the following two “he does not ration his gift of the Spirit”, and that, “The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him.”

We, humans, have such a funny idea of what love is. Is it a feeling or emotion that we experience? Is it an overwhelming desire that we have for something or someone? Most of us can all relate to someone or something we love, perhaps many of us love ice cream on a hot day and it makes us happy when we get a chance to eat some. 🍨 Perhaps this is Love as we know it but divine love is so very different, and I feel that the Gospel today makes that very clear to us.

We see that the Father gives “everything over to the Son” And that word “Everything” has a huge and very divine meaning.  The Father gives his everything out of Love for his Son, his being, his personhood, his essence, and his whole divine self and asks nothing from us in return. It’s a radical Love indeed!

Definitely, this is deep and Mystical, but it also serves as a challenge for us to Love in the same way. To give everything away, careful not to hold anything back. We are called to give all of ourselves, our talents, our possessions, and our lives away to others without counting the cost and excepting anything back in return. We must not “ration” our love, talents, or possessions, instead, we must give everything away!

It’s a challenge indeed, and we will more and likely fail many, many times throughout our journey here on Earth. However, one thing is for sure, Jesus is merciful, patient, and loving and with his help, we can perfect the love that we have for those around us. We must be confident that by practicing this radical love and by persistent prayer our hearts will become more docile over time, and we will find that we will become animated by the Holy Spirit to not ration our “everything” to those who need our love the most!

We are so excited to see how Jesus brings others to us to love in the same way! Our hearts are docile, and we are ready to give our lives to those he brings to Santa Maria Magdalena’s Home!

The feast of Saint Maria Magdalena is right around the corner, and we are working around the clock to prepare the Home, Chapel, and Grounds for the Bishop's visit and inauguration mass planned for July 22!

Bitter and Sweet Coffee Harvest

 

 

        A few weeks ago, the 1^st harvest of coffee at Santa Maria Magdalena’s home was ready to pick. And before I had a chance to pick the coffee; I was made aware of the fact it was time to harvest it, by many different people who always walk up and down the small gravel road in front of the home. Many stopped to ask if I would hire them to pick the coffee, others wonder if I was leaving it to rot, and perhaps most believed I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to picking coffee.  And to be honest the latter is very true. Short of realizing that every time I gazed out an open window or walked outside I could see the huge amount of small bright red fruit hanging on the coffee trees and could smell the sweet crisp aroma of the coffee in the air, much as if one walked into a Starbucks, this gringa had no idea how to grow or pick coffee, but there was one thing in their thinking that was wrong, I knew what I was going to do with the coffee and that was to give it away!

        I had been so excited for this day to come ever since Jesus allowed us to purchase this land for his mission. I asked my friend Maritza a single mother if she would help teach me how to pick the coffee, I also explained that she would be able to sell it and keep the proceeds for her and her children. It was so sweet to see how excited they all were. More so their unbelief of why I would just give her all the coffee. She kept saying to me, “it’s too much, just pay me a day’s wage”. (A day’s wage is 20 soles which depending on the exchange rate is roughly $6.00 US dollars.)

EVERYONE GETTING FITTED FOR A BUCKET

        I know it seems foolish to many and it makes absolutely no sense to those looking in from the outside why I felt called to give the harvest away and well if you study economics, you would for sure say we are doomed. In reality, we could have used the money for the construction expenses and to help maintain the list of needs here.  But I cannot help but recall in Deuteronomy 15:9  about the fact we should not count the cost and not to listen to the selfish voice within us.  So, to work alongside my poor humble friend and her 3 children was so priceless and so sweet and it filled my heart in such a wonderful way. It was such a confirmation for me that I am to toil in the fields alongside those whom Jesus leads here, such as Maritza and her children, to ensure that they have enough to eat and to ensure that they truly are granted an opportunity to meet Jesus himself.

        Though often I fail miserably at loving others like Christ, I can at least say on this day I may have not missed the mark too bad, and it felt so, so good. I am even more confident that is why Jesus is building this home, to give all we have away, everything we have, even our lives for the sake of the poor and abused unwed mothers and their children. I know in my heart that this is the only way that this home will grow and succeed in its mission to bring Unwed mothers and their children to the foot of the cross.

I cannot lie, though the day brought about a sweetness to it. There was a bit of bitterness that came along with it.

ALL OF MARTIZA CHILDREN WORK HARD

        It was a bitter day we harvested the coffee because It was cold and raining. But it was the only day we had to pick the coffee, if we waited longer the bright red fruit would fall on the ground and rot. It was bitter in the fact that I never have seen three children so eager to work in the rain and mud. It was bitter to see the young children at work because one could tell that they had spent many other days working in the fields to help their mother but only to make a small daily wage. There was a bit of bitterness due to the effort of having to crawl through the coffee trees and escaping death time and time again as we tried not to fall on the slippery slopes of the field. There were many bitter moments when one of us would fall with a full bucket of coffee due to the wet terrain.  It was also bitter in the fact that as just as much coffee we had in our buckets we also had almost as many spiders ranging in all colors and sizes. Some were fast and others were slow, and well many prayers were said, that they would not crawl up, and out of the buckets onto us, some still managed to find their way up our arms and even into our clothes. The next day Gabriel, Sarah, and I also experienced the bitterness of picking coffee and that was due to the fact that little, tiny insects from the coffee plants bored a home into our skin and took up residence deep within causing us to itch immensely.

        It was bittersweet to know that Maritza and her sweet children were able in one day to make enough to sustain them for a month! Bitter, for the fact that this is the reality here in Peru for unwed mothers. And sweet for the fact that Jesus loves them so much that we are here to help them and to Love on them in this way.

MARITZA IS HUMBLE AND SUCH A GOOD FRIEND, AND SHE TEACHES ME SO MUCH!

        I often reflect on how life as a Christian is challenging and living in the foreign mission field even more so. Many seek a comfortable life and desire to reap the benefits of their hard work. In fact, the way the world nowadays reveals this to us makes one believe that we have a right to obtain material goods and money and that we even have a right to store these things up for a later date. Though we must remember it’s not at all a sin to be rich, nor is it a sin to have possessions. In fact, the Catechism states clearly that man has a right to have private property and goods. However, in the same breath, it reminds us of the fact that “ownership of any property makes its holder a steward of Providence with the task of making it fruitful and communicating its benefits to others, first of all his family.” CCC 2404

And in scripture, we can learn what Jesus said about this very thing.

        The young ruler was told by Jesus to “Go and sell what you own, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mark 10:21 Or how about Jesus’s parable of the rich fool who built bigger barns to store his grain in abundance found in Luke 12:16. We even have the disciples give witness to the fact that they also had everything in common that they shared their possessions among one another. Act 4:32

        I never once thought that going into missions would be easy mentally, physically, or financially. So, what propels me? What has kept me here in a foreign land for almost 6 years? To be honest it’s these exact types of bitter-sweet moments with the poor unwed mothers here which rekindles my hope. This renewed hope is extended by my faith in Jesus, His resurrection, His forgiveness of our sins, and the life to come! Like Saint Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:18-19, “then those who have fallen asleep in Christ are utterly lost.  If it is for just this life that we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable of all men.”

        Perhaps our lives are to reflect the title of this blog, Bitter and sweet! We are all called to live a life for Christ and to not count the cost of doing so which indeed can at times be bitter, but how sweet is it to be able to be confident in the fact that we one day will be awarded a place in the kingdom of heaven!

         I have been reading a book written by Father Sean Davidson about the life of Santa Maria Magdalena. And I have been reflecting on what he wrote, “that the words found in Psalms 73:25 have become the words of Maria Magdalena”,  “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing upon earth that I desire besides you.”

        How impactful these words are! To love only Christ, in the same way, that Maria Magdalena did is a goal I pray we all are striving for. To live only for Jesus! That there would never exist a possession, nor any amount of money that would distract us from fully loving Jesus and his beloved poor!  

        It is in my holiest prayers that I pray we all can reflect on these words and what it means to love like Christ.  For us not to count the cost of following Christ nor the act of giving everything we have, even our own lives to the poor. I pray that we all can see beyond this at times very miserable world, full of hatred and unjust situations, and focus our eyes on the kingdom that awaits those who follow Christ in his mission and who help others to do the same.

 

 The miracles that Jesus is performing here are indeed a sight to see. It is through all of you, that Gabriel and I have the opportunity to love these sweet, sweet people! Thank you for your prayers and financial support. 

We still have a long list of needs here and projects that need to be completed before we can fully open. Such as beds, tables, chairs, linens, fencing, driveway, front gates, and three more small one-room homes for our long-term mothers.
